Frequently Asked Questions
What experience do I need to have to apply for an internship or volunteer placement with SHE, and when should I apply?
We know it’s difficult to gain the field experience you need, and so as long as you can demonstrate a willingness to learn and contribute to our work, you can apply for an internship or volunteer role. We receive many applications every year, and are only able to offer a limited number of placements due to our small team and available desk space. Therefore we recommend you get in touch with us as soon as possible to enquire about available placements.
How long are placements?
We are unable to provide placements for less than 12 weeks. Applications for placements that are for a longer period will have priority.
What will I do as part of a placement?
Activities will vary day to day, depending on what is happening at the time of your placement. We are usually running multiple projects and programs at any one time, and so our team is often very busy! You can expect to get involved in activities that are mostly office-based, supporting the work of our team (rather than field work). We do not allow interns or volunteers to deliver workshops or work directly with our program participants, mainly due to language and cultural barriers (all of our programs are delivered by Khmer female professionals, in Khmer language, and tailored to Khmer culture). As an intern or volunteer, your role is to support our team in doing their work, and learning new knowledge and skills. This can mean supporting the development of program materials such as evaluation reports, collecting data, creating communications content, assisting with event organisation, or helping to develop new systems and processes.
I have experience in workshop facilitation, can I help to design or deliver some of your programs / workshops?
All of our workshops and programs are designed by our team, using years of experience working in the field of women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship in Cambodia, and facilitated by professional Cambodian female facilitators. Depending on your background and experience, you may assist in workshop design, however the majority of our internship placements are filled by students or recent graduates. Although many people want to get involved in “fieldwork'“, in order to effectively contribute to our work it is likely that you will be mostly based in our office in Phnom Penh.
How can I organise accommodation, transport, etc.?
Before you come to Cambodia, we will provide you with information and recommendations about how to arrange suitable accommodation, transport to our office, and any other advice you might need.
How can I apply for a placement?
Complete this application form. Please note that we receive many applications every year, and will get back to you if you meet the selection criteria as outlined on this page.
Are internship or volunteer roles paid, or do you provide accommodation or cover other expenses?
Unfortunately not. We are occasionally able to offer long-term volunteer placements with all expenses covered and an allowance provided through the Australian Volunteers Program (check their website for upcoming opportunities), however other placements are unpaid and we are unable to cover any expenses.
We work with multiple professional volunteer organisations and universities, to ensure effective and high quality placements in our head office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. For more information, visit some of our partners’ websites below:
